Jazz in June 2010

Well, it’s the first Thursday of June, which means that we’re putting together the first Jazz in June issue of the 2011 season. I don’t want to post this year’s covers until they are all complete but I’ve done the Jazz in June covers for the past three years and last year’s covers were some of my favorites so I decided to post those today instead. Enjoy!

Papermaking: Fiber Research

For this assignment, we had to cook and beat unusual fibers to create our own pulp for making paper. I chose to use long grass for this assignment. First I cooked the grass for several hours with soda ash to remove the sugar and non-fibrous parts of the grass. Then I drained the fiber and beat it to create a grass-based pulp. Then I pulled several sheets of pure grass paper and several grass/cotton blends as well as kozo and kozo/cotton blends. After pressing the pages and letting them dry for several days, I used them as well as some yellow and purple cotton paper to create three research journals that document what I discovered during this process. I sewed the journals with bookmaking thread and made pockets on the pages to hold samples of the different types of paper. The journals are nested in a bed of rolls of very thin kozo paper in a wooden case with a plexiglass lid.

Beginning Photography: Ambiguous Space

The objective of this assignment was to use the camera to create optical illusions that confuse the space in the photos.

Beginning Photography Final: Series

For our Beginning Photography final, we had to do three series. I chose to focus on people for all of my series.

Series 1: Party Portraits

I created this series to explore the ways different people would use the props provided in the photobooth. I also included the hookah photos to provide a contrast to the structured system of the photobooth.

Series 2: Portraits

This series is meant to emulate turn of the century portraits. By instructing the models not to smile and placing them against a stark background in a plain chair, I intended to create honest portrayals of the models without the extra showiness or glamour of a modern portrait shoot.

Series 3: Neil

This series follows fellow Art major Neil Orians as he creates a three color screen print. I limited the series by taking all the photos from the same vantage point to show progression of process and change in environment over time.
